Hypoxic Vasoconstriction and the Effects of Adrenaline on Gas Exchange Efficiency in Fish Gills
نویسنده
چکیده
A gill perfusion technique allowing control of flow and pOt in the ventral aorta and in the irrigating water is described. The procedure includes measurements of flow and pQi in the dorsal aorta and the inferior jugular vein. Pressure recordings were made in the ventral and dorsal aortas. Lowering the perfusion fluid po% and/or the irrigating water pOi increased the branchial vascular resistance, without altering flow distribution. This response is probably released by vasoconstriction proximal to the arteriovenous anastomoses in the gill filaments. Adrenaline acted on receptors both proximal and distal to the arteriovenous anastomoses: branchial vascular resistance decreased, dorsal aortic flow increas'ed and oxygenation of the perfusion fluid increased. It is suggested that a combination of a direct myogenic response to hypoxia and release of adrenaline serve to increase O2 uptake efficiency when fish are exposed to hypoxic stress.

Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is an adaptive response that diverts pulmonary blood flow from poorly ventilated and hypoxic areas of the lung to more well-ventilated parts. This response is important for the local matching of blood perfusion to ventilation and improves pulmonary gas exchange efficiency. HPV is an ancient and highly conserved response, expressed in the respiratory orga...
متن کاملSustained Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in the Isolated Perfused Rat Lung: Effect of α1-adrenergic Receptor Agonist
Background: Alveolar hypoxia induces monophasic pulmonary vasoconstriction in vivo, biphasic vasoconstriction in the isolated pulmonary artery, and controversial responses in the isolated perfused lung. Pulmonary vascular responses to sustained alveolar hypoxia have not been addressed in the isolated perfused rat lung. In this study, we investigated the effect of sustained hypoxic ventilation o...

Background: The mechanism of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is still debatable. It has been proposed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) might be involved in HPV. However, there is no special transporter for superoxide anion in the cell membrane and it may release from the cells via anion exchanger. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of ROS and anion ex...

Background: Some respiratory diseases may induce alveolar hypoxia thereby hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV). However, the mechanisms of this physiologic phenomenon are not fully understood. This study was the first to investigate the role of anion exchanger in sustained HPV.Methods: Experiments were performed in the isolated perfused rabbit lung. After preparation, the lungs were divided...

Background: Contamination of feeds with cadmium leads to oxidative stress in vital tissues such as gills and affects the fish survival. Therefore, an increase in the capacity of the antioxidant defense system and detoxification system of fish may reduce adverse effects of pollutants. This study investigated the protective effects of microalga Spirulina platensis against oxidative stress in gill...
